Cross Flow Closed Circuit Cooling Tower for Industrial Process Cooling
A cross flow closed circuit cooling tower is an evaporative heat rejection system designed to cool process fluids circulating through a closed heat exchange coil. Unlike an open cooling tower, the process fluid remains inside the coil and does not directly contact the spray water or ambient air.
During operation, spray water is distributed over the outside surface of the heat exchange coil while ambient air flows horizontally through the heat exchange section. Heat from the process fluid is transferred through the coil wall to the spray water and then rejected to the atmosphere through evaporation.
This closed circuit design helps isolate the process fluid from external contaminants while providing efficient heat rejection for industrial cooling applications. The system can be configured for water, oil and other compatible liquids according to the required operating conditions.
Cooling capacity, coil material and other components can be selected according to the actual heat load, fluid flow rate, inlet and outlet temperatures, local design wet-bulb temperature and installation conditions.
Working Principle
The cross flow closed circuit cooling tower uses a closed process-fluid circuit, a separate spray-water circuit and a cross-flow air path to remove heat from the process fluid.
1. Hot Process Fluid Enters the Heat Exchange Coil
The heated process fluid enters the closed heat exchange coil after absorbing heat from the connected equipment or industrial process. The fluid remains inside the coil throughout the cooling process and does not directly contact the spray water or ambient air.
2. Spray Water Is Distributed Over the Coil
A spray water pump circulates water from the basin to the spray distribution system. The spray water is evenly distributed over the external surface of the heat exchange coil and flows downward by gravity.
3. Ambient Air Flows Horizontally Through the Tower
Fans draw ambient air into the cooling tower from the sides. The air passes horizontally through the coil and spray-water zone, creating a cross-flow heat exchange process.
4. Heat Is Rejected Through Evaporation
Heat moves from the process fluid through the coil wall to the spray water. As the spray water comes into contact with the moving air, part of the water evaporates and carries heat away from the system.
5. Cooled Process Fluid Returns to the System
After releasing heat, the process fluid leaves the heat exchange coil at a lower temperature and returns to the connected equipment or process. The cooling cycle then continues continuously.
Heat Transfer Path:
Process Fluid → Heat Exchange Coil → Spray Water → Ambient Air
Key Advantages of Closed Circuit Cooling
Closed Process Fluid Circuit
The process fluid circulates inside the heat exchange coil and remains separated from the external spray water and ambient air. This helps reduce the risk of external contaminants entering the process loop.
Cross Flow Heat Exchange
Ambient air enters horizontally from the sides while spray water flows downward over the heat exchange coil. The cross-flow arrangement creates an effective air-water contact path for evaporative heat rejection.
Flexible Process Fluid Options
The system can be designed for water, oil and other compatible liquids according to the fluid properties, operating temperature and required cooling capacity.
Multiple Material Options
The heat exchange coil and casing can be configured with different materials according to the application and corrosion-resistance requirements, including stainless steel and coated steel options.
Suitable for Industrial Process Cooling
The closed circuit design is suitable for applications where the process fluid needs to remain isolated from the external cooling environment.
Application-Based Configuration
Cooling capacity, coil material, fan, pump and other components can be selected according to the actual operating conditions and project requirements.
